Case studies of embedding R&D

The following case studies provide examples from our own experience of schools and alliances with a rich culture of research, which are embedding R&D in their systems and structures.

  • This case study illustrates a collaborative research project, Making Children's Learning Visible, led by Pen Green Teaching School Alliance, a nursery school in Corby with a long tradition and rich ethos of research and enquiry. 

  • This case study of a lesson study project at the RSA Academy in Tipton, West Midlands, illustrates how lesson study has been used to enhance and refresh the existing triad structure for teachers' professional learning.

  • This case study illustrates the rich research ethos and wide-ranging research activities and programmes at St Anthony's Academy in Sunderland, the lead school of the Beacon Teaching School Alliance.

 

Research Case Studies

Previous research has produced many useful and detailed case studies of schools and alliances which are embedding engagement in research and enquiry.

The Teaching Schools R&D network national themes project 2012-2014 includes a series of research case studies for each of the three themes: what makes great professional development; what makes great pedagogy and leadership of great pedagogy.  The research case studies illustrate a range of different roles and approaches to R&D within the school and across an alliance, including useful examples of project protocols and templates for different forms of collaborative enquiry.  

The Teaching Schools Council website features four individual case studies of teaching schools which are embedding R&D and collaborative enquiry across their alliance:

  • The Mead TSA in Wiltshire, which has developed three main approaches: establishing research hubs; developing the role of SLEs as research mentors, and introducing a digital 'research wheel' to integrate research with teacher appraisal and performance management systems.

  • Portswood TSA has developed a research club to promote R&D across their alliance, including involvement in large-scale national projects, developing and sharing work across the alliance and undertaking small-scale action research projects.

  • In Hampshire three teaching school alliances are working on a longitudinal R&D project on the theme of transition. This case study demonstrates how alliances can work together on multiple projects, involving large numbers of schools under an umbrella theme to develop a community of teachers committed to research.

  • The Bishop’s Stortford High School share findings from lesson study projects involving primary schools focusing on effective feedback in numeracy lessons and examining effective ways of undertaking group practical sessions in science.
